Michigan Family Vacations: 12 Fail-Proof Destinations

Planning a fun getaway with the kids? Michigan family vacations are packed with adventure, outdoor exploration, fresh air, and memory-making moments! Michigan is surrounded by water on 4 sides, including 4 of the 5 of the Great Lakes. This makes Michigan an excellent beach destination (although the water is cold!), but the area also holds so much more!

Whether you’re splashing on the shores of Lake Michigan, climbing giant sand dunes, or biking around charming small towns, there’s something here for every kind of family. After my recent trip to Michigan, I have created a list of some of my favorite places you should consider for your next vacation! To make it even better, consider making it a Michigan road trip!

Michigan Family Vacations: 12 Destinations

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake shore is one of the top choices for Michigan family vacations. Located along the Eastern shore of Lake Michigan, this national lakeshore offers a blend of natural beauty and kid-friendly activities that make it perfect for a family getaway.

One of the highlights is the Dune Climb, a massive sand dune that kids love to ascend and descend. The park also features the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, a 7.4-mile route with several overlooks offering breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding landscapes.

The Glen Haven Historic Village is one of the best things to do for history lovers, offering a glimpse into the past with its restored general store, blacksmith shop, and maritime museum. Kids can also learn about the area’s logging and shipping history.

Checking out the park’s beaches, such as those at Platte River Point and Esch Beach, provide opportunities for swimming and relaxation. The calmer & warmer waters at the mouth of the Platte River or North Bar Lake are more suitable for younger children.

Sleeping Bear Dunes also offers the Junior Ranger Program, where children can participate in educational activities and earn a badge. With its combination of outdoor adventure, educational experiences, and stunning natural scenery, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore makes one of the best Michigan family vacations.

Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is a fantastic destination for families seeking a mix of urban excitement and outdoor adventure. Known for its vibrant arts scene, interactive museums, and expansive parks, the city offers a variety of activities that children of all ages will love.

A must-visit attraction in the city is the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, which combines art and nature across 158 acres. The Lena Meijer Children’s Garden within the park features a tree house, rock quarry, and interactive water features, allowing the kids to get hands on.

Another great outdoor activity is Millennium Park, one of the largest urban parks in the U.S. The park features a beach, splash pad, and extensive trails. It’s an ideal spot for picnics, swimming, and enjoying nature without leaving the city.

For indoor fun, the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum offers two floors of interactive exhibits, like “Little GR” and “Bubbles” that encourage creativity and exploration. The Grand Rapids Public Museum is another great option for families, with three floors of interactive exhibits, a carousel, and a planetarium.

Other options for family fun include the Gametime Fun Park, Craig’s Cruisers, BattleGR, Great Lakes Glow Golf, or Altitude Trampoline Park.With its diverse range of both outdoor and indoor attractions, Grand Rapids provides a well-rounded experience for families, combining educational opportunities with fun.

Michigan Family Vacations: Detroit

Known as the Motor City for its role in the automobile industry, Detroit is one of the best destinations for Michigan family vacations because of its wide variety of family friendly activities, including outdoor exploration, educational attractions, and cultural experiences.

The Belle Isle Park is one of the best things to do in Detroit for families. The park is 982 acres and holds the Dossin Great Lakes Museum and the Belle Isle Nature Center. Kayaking and paddle boarding is a popular activity from the island.There is also a biking trail on the island and beach for swimming in the warmer months with views of the Detroit skyline.

The Detroit Riverwalk is another must do. It is a 5.5-mile promenade that follows along the Detroit River. It is perfect for a leisurely stroll and/or biking, and is also littered with playgrounds and splash pads.

The Dequindre Cut Greenway is another good option for biking or walking. The Greenway follows along an old railroad corridor and connects the Eastern Market to the Detroit Riverfront. Along the way you will find colorful art murals.

For those that love history, The Henry Ford Museum in nearby Dearborn, is an excellent option, offering immersive exhibits on American innovation, including historic vehicles and interactive displays. The Michigan Science Center features over 220 interactive exhibits, a planetarium, and live science demonstrations.

The Detroit Institute of Arts is a good option for art lovers. The museum is home to over 65,000 works. With its large number of attractions, Detroit provides an ideal setting for a memorable family vacation filled with discovery, learning, and fun.

Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is one of our favorite Michigan family vacations destinations. A small island located between Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas, the island takes you back in time with a blend of history, nature, and old-fashioned fun.

No cars are allowed on the island, but you honestly won’t need one! The island is small enough to get around by bike or foot (horse drawn carriages are common, but I won’t mention this again because we at The Navigating Mom only support ethical animal encounters). You reach the island by ferry from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace.

The 8-mile perimeter trail is one of the best things to do on Mackinac Island with kids, offering stunning views of Lake Huron and landmarks like Arch Rock. Along the way you can stop at Fort Mackinac, where you can participate in interactive exhibits and reenactments throughout the day.

Other outdoor activities on Mackinac Island include picnicking in Marquette Park, kayaking along the island’s shoreline, or going for a nature walk/hike inside Mackinac Island State Park. If you are looking for more thrills, you can try parasailing with Mackinaw Parasailing.

In the downtown area, you will find numerous fudge shops that provide sweet treats and demonstrations of fudge-making. You will also find dining options and a variety of local shops to explore. You can find miniature golf at The Greens of Mackinac of relax on the Great Lawn at Mission Point Resort. Mackinac Island has something to offer everyone, making it one of the best Michigan family vacations.

Traverse City

Situated along the shores of Lake Michigan, Traverse City is another urban destination in Michigan that combines outdoor exploration and family fun. Traverse City is on the Western side of Michigan, less than an hour from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, making them both Michigan road trip stops!

A visit to Clinch Park is one of the best things to do, offering a sandy beach, splash pad, and playground. The TART Trail is another great option for families. The TART trail is a 10.5 mile multi-use trail that connects parks, beaches, downtown shopping areas, and other trails. You can use the trail for hiking, biking, or roller skating.

Traverse City State Park offers a sandy beach for swimming, camp sites, walking trails, and picnic areas. Kayaking, canoeing, and stand up paddleboarding on the Boardman River or Traverse Bay are great for active families.

The Boardman River Trails take you through wooded areas, wetlands, and along the Boardman River. The Boardman River Nature Center offers nature exhibits that allow you to combine some family friendly educational opportunities with outdoor exploration.

You can explore the Mission Point Lighthouse, reachable with a drive down the Old Mission Peninsula. You can explore the museum, gift shops, and tower climb. Don’t miss the National Cherry Festival if you’re visiting in early July. The festival is a week-long celebration with parades, games, and, of course, cherries!

For indoor activities, visit the Great Lakes Children’s Museum, which features interactive exhibits the kids can explore. For family fun, consider Incredible Mo’s, which offers bowling, laser tag, an arcade, and escape room challenges.

The Great Wolf Lodge provides an indoor water park that’s a hit with kids, regardless of the weather. And for a touch of culture, the Dennos Museum Center offers art exhibits and an interactive discovery gallery.Traverse City has so much to offer families, and being in such close proximity to Sleeping Bear Dunes, you can combine a visit to both of them.

The Upper Peninsula

The Upper Peninsula (U.P.) is one of the best Michigan family vacations destinations for outdoor loving families. The Upper Penisula offers hikes to waterfalls, historic sites to explore, water sports, lighthouses, and more.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of the best destinations in the Upper Peninsula. The colorful sandstone cliffs and pristine beaches along Lake Superior are a sight to see. You can take a boat tour that offers an up-close views of the stunning rock formations and waterfalls, or go kayaking (best done on a guided tour).

Tahquamenon Falls State Park is another one of the best things to do, boasting one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. The park features easy, accessible trails and opportunities for picnicking and wildlife viewing.The Keweenaw Peninsula offers scenic drives, historic lighthouses, and the Delaware Copper Mine. The mine offers self-guided tours.

The Soo Locks, located in Sault Ste. Marie, provides opportunities to watch massive ships navigate a lock that connects Lake Superior to the lower Great Lakes. You can also take a boat tour which gives you a unique perspective of the locks.

While the Upper Penisula is largely about outdoor activities, there are also some indoor options for family fun. In Marquette, the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum provides interactive exhibits designed by children in areas like science, art, and communication. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum and the A.E. Seamon Mineral Museum are also great options in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Grand Haven

Known for its iconic red lighthouse, Grand Haven is one of the best Michigan family vacations destinations. The beach town offers a combination of sun, sand, and small-town charm mixed in with lots of family fun.

One of the best things to do is visit Grand Haven State Park. Here you can spend the day at the beach and the kids can enjoy the beachfront playground. Nearby you will find the Grand Haven South Pierhead Lighthouses and pier that you can go for a leisurely stroll on.

The Grand Haven Boardwalk is good for walking, following alongside the Grand River. The boardwalk extends for 2.5 miles. The Rosy Mound Natural Area is good for hiking through wooded dunes, up stairs in the dunes, and to views overlooking Lake Michigan.

The Grand Haven area offers opportunities for kayaking and paddleboarding on the Grand River. Lakeshore Kayak Rental & Sport offers single kayak, tandem kayak, canoe, stand up paddleboards, and bicycle rentals in Spring Lake, just a short drive from Grand Haven.

The Grand Haven area also features many options for parks, including North Beach Park (beach, trails, and views of Lake Michigan) and Kirk Park (dunes, beach, and views of Lake Michigan).

The Imagination Station is another great, family-friendly option and is a unique 10,000 square foot playground designed by local children. In the evening hours, don’t miss the Grand Haven Musical Fountain, a synchronized water and light show that plays nightly.

On a rainy day in Grand Haven, consider visiting the Midwest Miniatures Museum, a museum featuring miniature houses, rooms, and models. Galley Uptown features art from local and regional artists. Grand Fun! is an indoor entertainment complex good for kids of all ages. Grand Haven is a Lake Michigan destination that offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor exploration.

Michigan Family Vacations: Port Huron

Port Huron, situated along the shores of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, offers a charming waterfront, rich maritime heritage, and large selection of kid-friendly activities make it an ideal destination for a memorable family getaway.

Lakeside Beach is one of the best things to do in Port Huron with kids. You can enjoy a sandy beach, playground, and splash pad. Explore Michigan’s oldest lighthouse, the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, on a guided tour that provide panoramic views and a glimpse into the region’s nautical history.

For a family-friendly walk, the Blue Water River Walk features a nearly one-mile paved trail along the St. Clair River, featuring shorelines, public art installations, and opportunities to spot passing freighters.The Thomas Edison Riverwalk is another great waterfront walking trail that follows alongside the St. Clair River.

Huron Lady II offers sightseeing cruises along the St. Clair River, including 90 minute day cruises, dinner cruises, sunset cruises, and fireworks cruises. Kayaking and paddle boarding on the Blueways of St. Clair is another option.

On a rainy day, the Discovery City Children’s Museum offers interactive, nature-inspired exhibits tailored for children under 12. Nearby, the Thomas Edison Depot Museum, housed in a historic train depot where Edison once worked, provides hands-on exhibits that explore the inventor’s early life and innovations.

For a unique experience, families can visit the Huron Lightship Museum, the last floating lightship on the Great Lakes, now serving as a museum that offers insights into maritime navigation and life aboard the ship. For some family fun, take on an escape room, enjoy indoor roller skating or ice skating, or visit the Birchwood Mall.

Frankenmuth

Known as “Michigan’s Little Bavaria” Frankenmuth is a Michigan city full of culture, nature, and unique experiences. The city highlights its German heritage through architecture and unique experiences, making it one of the best Michigan family vacations.

For some time outdoors, Heritage Park is one of the best outdoor spaces for families in Frankenmuth, featuring playgrounds, picnic areas, and different festivals throughout the year. Memorial Park is another open space offering a playground, disc golf, a rose garden, splash pad, and bandshell for concerts and events.

The Bavarian Belle Riverboat offers guided one hour sightseeing cruises on the Cass River. For some thrills, check out the aerial challenge course at the Frankenmuth Aerial Park.

Stroll downtown Frankenmuth for shopping, dining, and Bavarian-style architecture. Be on the lookout for colorful Frankenmuth Murals as you explore. You can walk across the Holz Brücke Covered Bridge, a wooden footbridge that crosses the Cass River.

The Frankenmuth River Place Shops are an outside shopping village with over 40 unique shops and attractions (including a mirror maze and arcade). If you are in the mood for some winter cheer, you can check out Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, the world’s largest Christmas store.

Kayaking the Cass River is a great outdoor option for families. You can join a guided tour or take a trip down the river on your own. For family-friendly hikes/walks, consider the Frankenmuth Riverwalk, a 0.9 mile walk along the Cass River in Heritage Park.

The Bavarian Inn Lodge boasts Michigan’s largest indoor waterpark, featuring 16 waterslides, a wave pool, and a lazy river. Additionally, Zehnder’s Splash Village offers a 50,000-square-foot waterpark with tube slides, a six-story family raft ride, and an on-site arcade.

Bay City

Bay City is a historic waterfront city that sits on the Saginaw River in Eastern Michigan. The city offers families a blend of outdoor adventures, educational attractions, and charming waterfront views, making it an ideal destination for a family getaway.

Bay City State Park is one of the best things to do in Bay City for families. The park offers a combination of hiking and swimming, with 1,000 feet of beach and 2,000 acres of wetlands. There is also a splash pad and playground for the kids to enjoy. The Tobico Marsh (wetland area) is good for hiking trails and bird watching.

The Bay City Riverwalk is another good option for families. The Riverwalk follows along the Saginaw River and is good for biking, running, and skating. Wenonah Park is a downtown riverfront park that offers concerts and festivals throughout the year.

Bay City Boat Lines offers scenic cruises along the Saginaw River, giving you unique views of the city from the water. Kayaking and paddle boarding is a popular activity on the Saginaw River and Tobico Lagoon.

For a dose of history, the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum offers tours of the USS Edson, a retired Navy destroyer. The Delta College Planetarium offers shows about astronomy and science.

On a rainy day in Bay City, visit the Crazy Quarters Arcade, paint a piece of pottery at Painterly Pottery, or visit the Antique Toy and Firehouse Museum. Bay City offers plenty of opportunities for easy, family friendly nature walks and wildlife spotting, along with rainy day family fun opportunities, making it one of the best Michigan family vacations.

Muskegon

Muskegon, Michigan sits along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, offering a blend of outdoor adventure at its many state and waterfront parks with tons of family friendly activities. Muskegon is located on the Western shore of Michigan.

One of the top attractions is Michigan’s Adventure, the state’s largest amusement and water park. The park has over 60 rides and attractions, including seven roller coasters and a full water park. The park also has areas designed for younger children, including Camp Snoopy and Half Pint Paradise.

Hiking is another one of the best outdoor activities in Muskegon. The area features hiking trails, paved biking trails, and sand dunes hikes in its various state and waterfront parks. Take a walk out on the pier out to the Muskegon South Pierhead Light. Kayaking and stand up paddle boarding are also popular activities in Muskegon.

For beach lovers, Pere Marquette Park offers sandy shoreline, playgrounds, and volleyball courts. Muskegon State Park also features sandy beaches along with forested dunes and trails, with views of Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan. P.J. Hoffmaster State Park offers hiking trails through forested dunes.

The Muskegon Lakeshore Trail is good for walking or biking along the waterfront. The trail is 13.3 miles and connects many waterfront parks, including Pere Marquette Park, Heritage Landing, Beachwood Park, and the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve.

The Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park offers a variety of activities for family fun and thrills, including zip lines, climbing, archery, and the luge. In the winter, the park offers ice skating, snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, and sledding.

For history lovers, the USS Silversides Submarine Museum, features a World War II submarine you can tour and learn about naval history.The Lakeshore Museum Center provides interactive exhibits that explore the region’s natural and cultural history. Craig’s Cruisers Family Fun Center offers go-karts, mini-golf, arcade games, and more.

Holland

Holland, Michigan, is a great choice for families looking to explore outdoors while diving into some cultural experiences. With its rich Dutch heritage and picturesque setting along Lake Michigan, Holland offers a variety of activities that cater to children of all ages.

Nelis’ Dutch Village, a charming theme park that brings Dutch culture to life, is one of the best ways to experience the Dutch heritage of the area. You can enjoy traditional Dutch dancing and participate in interactive exhibits that showcase the Netherlands’ history and traditions.

For a scenic experience, visit Windmill Island Gardens, home to the authentic 250-year-old De Zwaan windmill. Here you can explore the beautiful gardens, watch the windmill in action, and learn about Dutch engineering .

Holland State Park is home to expansive sandy beaches, playgrounds, and stunning views of the iconic “Big Red” lighthouse. It’s a good spot for swimming, picnicking, and building sandcastles.

On a rainy day, the Holland Aquatic Center offers indoor water fun with pools, slides, and play areas suitable for all ages. The Holland Museum is another great rainy door option for families, with exhibits on the area’s history and hands-on exhibits. The Lost City offers indoor laser tag and mini golf, Shift Climbing offers indoor rock climbing, and Holland Playground is a large indoor playground.

If you’re visiting in May, don’t miss the Tulip Time Festival, a celebration featuring millions of blooming tulips, parades, traditional Dutch performances, and family-friendly activities. There is also a fall festival if visiting in October. With its combination of cultural charm and engaging attractions, Holland provides a memorable family vacation experience.
