Enjoy Some Water Sports

Getting out on the water is one of the best things to do in Old Forge with kids. Mountain Man Outdoor Supply Company has kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddle boards available for rent. There are options to rent for a half day or full day. All rentals must be returned by 5:30pm. This company is a perfect option for families because they have kids kayaks available for rent.

With Mountain Man Outdoor Supply Company, you can pick up the equipment, or you can have it delivered to your hotel or campsite for an extra fee (Old Forge, Eagle Bay/Inlet, and Raquette Lake).

If you prefer, you can rent the equipment and launch right from the company’s dock onto the Moose River, or take their shuttle to nearby launches, including the North Street Bridge. The company also offers a shuttle that takes you to various locations along the Northern Forest Canoe Trail (which takes you as far as Saranac Lake).

Go Star Gazing

The Adirondack Mountains have some of the darkest night skies in the state with little light pollution. On clear nights, observers can typically see the Milky Way, major constellations, visible planets, and seasonal meteor showers without specialized equipment.

Checking local weather forecasts and moon phases in advance is recommended, as bright moonlight can significantly reduce visibility of faint celestial objects.

Accessible viewing locations include lakefront areas around First Lake and elevated terrain such as nearby Rocky Mountain, both of which offer broader horizons and reduced obstruction from trees.

For darker skies, short drives farther into the central Adirondacks can further minimize artificial light. Those seeking guided programs or telescope access can visit the Adirondack Sky Center & Observatory (located in Tupper Lake), which offers public observing sessions and astronomy events throughout the year.

Nutty Putty Mini-Golf

Nutty Putty Mini-Golf is an 18 hole mini-golf course in downtown Old Forge that is good for younger kids. The course is set among shady trees and features creative, hand-crafted obstacles. Nutty Putty is a great stop when exploring/shopping downtown Old Forge.

There is also an ice cream stand onsite, and nearby you will find a candy store with an antique carousel pony sitting out front. Nutty Putty Mini-Golf is generally open from Spring through early fall.

Camping is one of the best ways to experience the Adirondack Mountains. Spend the night under the stars, and then spend the days relaxing, hiking nearby trails, or getting out on the water. A variety of camping options are offered, ranging from cabins to traditional tent sites.

The Old Forge Camping Resort is a more upscale camping option with 400 sites and a private lake. The campground has a combination of cottages, cabins, RV sites, and tent sites.

Nick’s Lake Campground is another option with 112 campsites. The campground has a picnic area, beach with lifeguards, and access to over 5 miles of hiking trails. The lake, which is closed to motorboats, is a good place for kayaking and canoeing.

HTR Adirondacks (formerly known as Singing Waters Campground) is another option, with traditional tent sites, “glampy” Safari tents, cabins, and RV sites. The campground has direct access to the Moose River, making it a great place to stay if you plan on kayaking or canoeing the river.

The trail includes a combination of paved and unpaved areas and takes you through mixed hardwood and conifer forest, wetlands, and quiet backcountry areas. The trail is popular for hiking and biking.
